John Mayer, a Cold, and “It Looks Gay”

Anyone want to buy me John Mayer’s latest album, “Continuum“? You’ll be my best friend.

Yesterday I realized that I have a cold coming on. Ugh! My nose is all drippy, which doesn’t work well when you are at work and need to use your hands a lot. I’ll just leave that at… it’s gross. Mmm’kay? My throat is also a little bit sore and I sneeze every now and then, but not much. So far it’s a pretty mild cold. I hope it stays that way.

I took some cold/allergy medicine today. It was some over-the-counter shit I bought that’s been sitting in the medicine cabinet for months. I took them at 5:20 this morning without looking to see if it was a non-drowsy formula. I then headed off to work in Renton, about a 30 mile drive. About halfway there I started getting inexplicably tired. Usually, when I get up in the morning and head off to work, I’m not really all that sleepy during the drive. I couldn’t figure out why I was getting sleepy and then I remembered the damn cold pills. Cold/allergy medicine has never made me drowsy before. I even used this particular brand before, while Flagging, and it didn’t make me drowsy. But that had to be why. Luckily I got to work safely and was able to do my job okay, though I was a bit slower than usual. It’s a good thing Luis wasn’t there to harp on me for going a bit slow. I got a lot done, but it just felt slow to me. *shrug* From now on, I’ll wait until I get to work before I take the pills. Hopefully I’ll be over my cold in a couple of days though.

There’s this guy at work whose name I can’t recall but I’ve worked with him before. He’s a bit of a know-it-all and wants everyone to do everything his way, as his way is the right way. Yesterday, or perhaps it was the day before, the guy walks into the room in the apartment unit that I was working on at the moment. I asked him if he knew who was installing the doorstops on the doors rather than mounting them to the walls, where I was told they were supposed to be installed. He said that they had decided that’s where they wanted them and I made some sort of disapproving noise (the doorknobs look stupid there and it is inconsistent with the other apartment units). He then says, “I know, it looks gay but that’s how they want it.”

It looks gay? For the love of [insert random deity]!

He had walked out of the room just after saying that and I had to suppress the urge to yell out to him. When I don’t say something I sort of beat myself up for allowing someone to say that. If I do say something I wonder if I’ve overreacted. My general rule of thumb is, if they continue to chat with me I’ll usually say something, not always, but usually. It’s sort of a choose your battles sort of thing. If they walk off, I’m not likely to bother with it; if they are someone who I don’t have to deal with on a regular basis, I’ll let it go… You get the idea.

Who still says that shit, though? Are these people still in junior high school? Grow up! Get a clue! Would these same people go around saying things like, “That’s so Jew!” or perhaps, “Ugh, that looks Mexican!” *grabs the person by the shirt collar and shakes them*

And you know what bugs me about this? It’s when you do get a chance to explain to someone that you find that offensive and they just don’t quite grasp how equating “gay” with “bad” would be offensive. These words should not be interchangeable!
