Out at Work

Apparently people at work have noticed the pink triangle, which is a component of the Gay Mafia sticker that I have on my car. The lead guy, Brent, whom I’ve been working with for a few weeks now, and I were chatting this morning. I mentioned one of the managers at the office, Chris, and told Brent that I wasn’t sure how to take the guy. I can’t tell if he likes me or hates me or what. Brent then mentioned that the way that Chris talks to me may have something to do with the pink triangle on my car.

Brent is the first person to acknowledge the pride-related sticker on my car to me. I’m glad he did. I didn’t know how safe it was to come out to any of these people. He said that the sticker has been noticed by other people and they’ve asked him about it. I really haven’t worked with too many guys at this job site so there can only be a few guys that this might be. I asked Brent if I was now part of the rumor-mill or what. I’ve been the subject of rumor-mills before, without knowing it, and it sucks when you find out later on. He didn’t answer. Not directly anyway.

He said that he had told the guys that asked about me that I was a good worker, I showed up on time, did my work, didn’t complain, did my work well, and that’s all he cares about. Brent has been nothing but nice to me and I think I’m even one of his favorites out at the job site. It’s good to have at least one person know that I’m gay. It helps in determining who else, if any, are safe to tell… I do need to ask Brent who it is that already knows. It’s awkward when you think someone knows but you aren’t certain.

Oh, the time that I was part of the rumor mill was way back when I worked at Freei, a.k.a Freeinternet.com, the first free Internet service provider. I was working in technical support and was transferring to another department to start my new position as a project manager-type-person, with no actual job title or description. My new desk was located near the software developers and I.T. guys. For some reason I had been the topic of discussion amongst these guys because I was a new gay in their midst or something. They had such an issue with me being gay that before I even started working in that department they had all had a meeting in which the manager of the department had to give them all a lecture. Later on I was pulled aside and told about this whole debacle. Yeah, that was welcoming to hear.

The problem with being told about this is that it does no good and it makes you wonder who all was involved. Who has the issue with me and who doesn’t? At least with my current job the guys that I work with all treat me well and have never said a negative word to me. Funny how things change so much in a matter of eight years.

Shit, it was eight years ago that I worked for Freei. Damn! I feel old now.
