Knees, Being Sick, and Lights Out

Posted on | January 6, 2007 | No Comments

As most of you know, I have bad knees. Yes, they misbehave, and way too often. The primary problem with my knees is the spontaneous patella (kneecap) dislocations. That hasn’t happened in a few months *knocks on wood* but my knees have been hurting for a few months.

Every time I would sit or stand, or walk up or down stairs, or just sit for too long in one position, my knees would ache. It would hurt pretty badly but then be fine once I started moving. It was tolerable. Now the pain seems to be subsiding but yesterday I noticed a new… problem, of sorts: my knees make crackling and squeaking noises.

I was standing in the kitchen and it was unusually quiet in my apartment. I had to kneel down to grab something and on the way back up I heard a quiet crackling/squeaking sound. It sounded a bit like a door that hadn’t been opened in decades being slowly opened again. The hinges had rusted into their restful position and have now been disturbed. It didn’t hurt at all, but didn’t sound pleasant. I didn’t stand there thinking that the sound should be added to one of those ambient noises sound machines.

I wonder if the Tin Woodsman has any extra oil…

I have finally received my medical insurance card but I need to now find the time to get to the doctor and get an overhaul. With my current work schedule, I’d have to take a day off in order to go. I’ve already had three “sick” days (icy roads, car trouble, and actually sick) and have only been working there for a few months. The less days that I have to take off, the better.

In other news, I have been sick since last year. I have this flu-ish cold thing. *coughs* I can’t even remember when I first got sick. I know it was before New Years Eve. I felt sick sometime before then, then felt pretty decent for a little bit and then on New Years Day I felt like shit again. I just bought some cold medicine and took some a little before writing this. Hopefully that will help.

Last night my power went out. That’s the second time this season. I think that since I’ve lived at this apartment complex the power has only gone out about three times, that I can recall. Each time it’s off for less than 12 hours, so I can’t complain too much. Some people effected by the storms are without power for days. I don’t think I could handle that. Though, anytime the power goes out I try to think of what it was like back in the days before electricity had been discovered; before light bulbs were invented. People spent their entire lives without such luxuries so we are hardly in any position to bitch too much. It could always be worse.

Of course that doesn’t stop me from getting cranky about the power being out.
