Craigslist Personals Ad

Posted on | April 13, 2009 | No Comments

I’m not someone with a lot of self-esteem. I may fake it sometimes, but in reality, it’s fairly low. So I was surprised when on April 11th, after posting a personals ad on craigslist.org under the “misc romance” section, I received 30 responses. Twenty of those were within 24 hours. It was kind of a boost to my self-esteem. I had included a photo of myself (admittedly one of the few good ones) so I knew that whoever had responded didn’t just do so based on what I had written but somewhat on looks too, which is the department in which I usually feel I’m lacking.

A lot of the responses seemed to be moved by my ad, and enjoyed reading it. And it was a long fucking ad too. You know me, when I get on a roll I can write a fucking book. But I could tell that most of the responders had actually read it. Of course some seemed to miss the point of it entirely and sent me messages wanting to hookup. Others turned out to be spam-bot responses, but the 30 that I counted were the ones I felt seemed real. I’m sneaky. When I received responses I’d cross-check their email address on MySpace and Facebook, or Google search their user name. It was in doing one of these searches that I found out one of the responses was just a spam bot.

Out of all of the replies, only a small handful were promising. I tried to reply to everyone, unless it was clear that they didn’t quite grasp what I was talking about in the ad, and let them know that I wasn’t interested, or that I just didn’t think things would work. That gets hard to do… at least it’s difficult when you try and do so with tact.

Anyways, there, I’ve posted something on here. I do so so seldom any more. Oh, and if you are one of my Facebook friends reading this cross-posted blog entry and you are weirded-out by having read my personals ad. Well, get over it. You should have known better! What did you think you’d be reading in a personals ad? :-P
