The Gays and My Opinions

Posted on | May 19, 2009 | No Comments

I’ve been paying a bit more attention to the news with regard to gay-related topics lately. A few of the web sites which I follow could be considered fluff sites, filled with gossip and trivial matters but I pay more attention to the more interesting topics, such as the progress of LGBT rights and acceptance.

I’d like to start off by saying that the term “Sexual Preference” needs to be removed from the lexicon. It is a misnomer. Preference implies that I’ve tried both and could go one way or the other but I’d prefer to go this route, rather than that route. “Sexual Attraction” would be more accurate. I’ve never been with a woman and I have no intention of doing so. My attraction is solely directed toward men.

Next, let me go on a bit of a tirade: Gay Marriage… For the life of me I can not understand why anyone would be against gay marriage. Most opponents of it cite religious reasons for their lack of acceptance – that gay sex is a sin and therefor should not be condoned. Alright, let’s say gays buggering each other is a sin. Personally, I have no religious beliefs, other than the believe that religion is all poppycock. So, why, then, should your belief that it is a sin have any bearing on what I do? Oh, that’s right, because your religion deems what is appropriate for all of humanity, not just for those in your particular faith. It’s been pointed out countless times that Leviticus, the book typically used to argue against men lying with men as they do with women, also forbids the consumption of shellfish, among other regular everyday activities which people are all perfectly okay with (for the most part). Since I have very little knowledge of the Bible, I won’t go into that, and it’s already been done to death… a death likely caused by stoning.

I was recently reading some comments posted on a “Traditional Marriage” group on Facebook which my friend, Erik pointed out to me. One comment I read was from a man who claimed that allowing gays to marry would ultimately lead to the government forcing churches to marry two men or two women even if it is against the beliefs of their religion. This is pure propaganda. There has never been any suggestion, of which I am aware, that would indicate that the government would force churches to perform ceremonies against their will. This is preposterous. Obviously we still have this thing called the First Amendment in the the Constitution which separates church from state. It says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” The main part of that which is relevant to this is “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” So, there goes that argument, buddy.

Marriage is not simply a religious ceremony, you narrow-minded religious Bible-thumpers! There are numerous rights afforded to married couples which are not afforded to same sex couples. Religious ceremonies don’t provide rights, government red tape does!

I just don’t get it. Is it purely hate or are these people really just so mind-numbingly stuck in follower mode that they can’t think apart from what their church tells them? They listen to all of the propaganda which tells them that allowing gays to marry will cause them to have to put up with gay teachers forcing their students to read “Heather Has Two Mommies.” As if parents have never had the right to protest certain books from being read to their children. I’ve never read that book but I doubt that it’s horridly inappropriate for children, but it may be inappropriate for smaller children. In any case, I can’t think of a reason why it would be read in schools… nor can I think of how gay marriage has anything to do with a teacher reading a book to students.

Then they claim that us gays will start recruiting children into the gay lifestyle. For Pete’s sake. We have no need to recruit. Have you seen how many people are in attendance at a gay pride rally or parade? There is no shortage of queer folk. I was raised by a straight mother and an absent, but straight father. Their orientation had no bearing on what I grew up to be. But I’m not the best example, having only been raised by my mother. But I do know of numerous gay men who were raised by straight couples who remained together. If our opponents’ logic was impeccable, and the orientation of couples would determine the orientation of their offspring then there would be no instance of homosexuality since only a straight couple would procreate. Clearly there is no bearing. Please stop using this argument.

Have you ever seen old propaganda material: pamphlets, videos, etc, from the WWII days, provided by Hilter and his ilk? Their statements and method of delivery seems oddly similar to that of the Religious Right’s method of keeping the LGBT community at bay. I’m just saying… Think about it.

Oh, look, the National Organization for Marriage exploits children, who likely have no clue what they are talking about, in an attempt to further their cause: http://www.afterelton.com/blog/dennis/nom-ad-kids-say-the-darndest-things
